Design the logo in motion first

Your identity will be seen for six seconds, at 9:16, on a phone, with the sound off. Design for that first and the static case takes care of itself.

The traditional order is logo, then palette, then type, then — much later, usually by a different team — motion guidelines. That order made sense when the primary artefact was a printed page. It does not make sense now.

The primary artefact is a six-second vertical video with the sound off. Design for that.

What changes when you invert the order

  • Marks get simpler, because complexity disappears at 200ms
  • Colour contrast gets stronger, because the ad plays over footage
  • Type gets a motion-specific weight, not just a display weight
  • The sign-off gets designed as a beat, not as a lockup
  • Sound becomes part of the identity, not an afterthought

Take a hospitality identity: start it as a brass material test on video rather than as a logo sketch, and how the mark catches light in motion determines the final form. On a static menu either version works. In a fifteen-second reel only one is unmistakable — and the reel is where the audience actually meets it.

The practical test

Before you sign off an identity, cut it into a six-second ad over real footage, mute it, and watch it on a phone at arm's length. If you cannot tell whose brand it is, the identity is not finished, however beautiful the brand book looks.

The format an identity actually has to survive

An identity that only works standing still is a logo, not a system.
